Its not always the case that a homeowner will bother to do routine checks on their sump pumps. At least not until they become dysfunctional. But given the level of damage water in your basement can inflict not to mention the cost, doing routine checks on your sump pump is important to combat all the common problems.

To help prepare your sump pump for the next storm, it helps to be properly motivated. And what better motivation than to pretend that the storm is coming in less than ten minutes? Crazy, but you can be surprised by how effective a small imagination can be. Its like they say: you become what you think. This will motivate you to get your sump pump well in advance before the next storm hits.

Once you are motivated, your next step will be to check whether your sump pump is functional. To do that, drop a little water onto the sump pump. If the sump pump drains the water almost immediately, then its functional. Otherwise, you have a problem. In this case, check for the following:

Stuck switches

When the level of water in the sump pit rises beyond a certain level, the sump pump is activated by a mechanical switch. On occasion, the switch may get stuck probably due to exposure to dust. Whatever the reason for that, a suck switch is bad for the basement. Check your switches at least twice each year to ensure that they move freely.

Power failure

Unless you have a backup generator, dont expect your sump pump to protect the basement from water. This is because the power tends to go out when there are storms. Without power, a sump pump cannot do much to keep water out of your house. A best initiative to take: buy and install a backup generator.

Old age

Lets face it. Nothing is meant to last forever, not even the best sump pumps. With time, they wear and tear and eventually become ineffective. Its however impossible to tell when old age will catch up with your sump pump. As a result, have a professional company check it for you in case you have any worries.

Low quality product

You probably went for the cheaper sump pump brand because you thought it was a good bargain. Or you got conned and paid big bucks for a product that was not worth the money in the first place. Whichever the case, you now have a poor quality product. The risk you are looking at here is a wet basement at best.

Whatever the issue with sump pump is, the key to being prepared for the next storm lies in identifying those issues and fixing them. Dont have a backup generator? Get one. Is the switch stuck? Fix it or have a professional sump pump service fix it for you. And if your sump pump is old and worn out? Purchase a new one. Check its quality before you pay for it and also make sure that the sump pump installation in Toronto is done perfectly. Its all simple mathematics, and if you do it right, your basement is going to beat several storms to come.
