What is a Sump Pump??
A sump pump ensure your foundations and footings remain dry by effectively redirecting water while other basements without this pump are susceptible to floods.
It is installed so that your weeping tile system surround the perimeter for the home or surrounds the interior of your basement in order to have a place to drain. It used to remove the dampness and moisture that sits on top of the water table that is located on top of the homes foundation.
The older method is now against plumbing codes and municipal by laws. Before, the draining of a weeping tile was to connect it to your existing drainage system. This system was almost a guarantee your home would eventually get flooded due to the deteriorating system.
Our Sump Pump Installation Process for your Scarborough Home
The first step of a sump pump installation is to sever the old weeping tile connection from the city sewer. This will help against flooding.
In order to ensure the sump pump works most effectively we also recommend the installation of a sewer back up valve (back water valve) in order to protect you from any sewage that comes form the city sewers. If you want more information, check out our drain section to read more about backwater valves and how important it is for flood protection in your home.
Sump pumps features
A sump pump has 3 main features:
- The first is a tank that holds the drained water water from a weeping tile
- Second, a pump, that pumps, water up and out of the basement to a predetermined drainage point
- Lastly, a battery back up system and alarm can be added on as an addition for additional protection.
The Battery Back up System
The Battery back up system is a separate pump that gets its power from a marine battery. This is a remedy for a power failure or a primary pump failure. This system will automatically switch on and continue to pump water our of your basement without power for up to 24 hours. The battery system also includes an alarm that automatically switches on every time the battery pump kicks in, so that you will be aware that the main pump is not functioning.
The Water Back up System
This is another back up option that can be installed with your sump pump in order to ensure the pump keeps working through any power failure. The beauty of the water back up system is that it runs of water which turns its turbine and pumps water our of your basement. This back up option has no time restraing. As long as your water supply is continuous, it will keep pumping.
There is a restriction to this type of solution. Your home needs to be equipped with a minimum of a 3/4″ water supply line from the city that runs into your home. For best results, ensure the supply line is close to the sump pump if possible.
The worlds climate is rapidly changing and our homes infrastructure were not build to withstand these types of winds and heavy amounts of rainfall. The aging infrastructure needs to be revamped and waterproofed in order to ensure that the home remains intact. The backwater valve is an alternative option to the sump pump and without one or the other you can loose your most valuable possessions. In fact, back in 2013 the insurance industry spent almost 1 billion dollars in repairs of clients basements and possessions. Insurance companies and municipalities now encourage homeowners to install a mainline backwater valve.
- The installation of the backwater valve takes only one day, its a fast and efficient process
- The valve may be installed at the front-inside foundation wall or outside
- We use a camera to inspect the sewer to determine the ideal location for the valve
- Once the valve is installed it will allow waste from the home to flow to the city main
- Prevents your sewer line from backing up into your basement and causing irreparable damages
- If the city main becomes overworked and begins to back up, the valve will automatically close and prevent a flood from the city main sewer
