Backwater Valve & Sump Pump

Sump pumps are an extremely effective method of controlling water, and ensuring it is redirected out of your basement.

A sump pump ensures your home’s foundations and footings remain dry by effectively redirecting water out of the home. Other basements without this pump are susceptible to floods.

It is connected to your weeping tile system (also called a drainage tile, pushing underground water away from your home), surrounding the perimeter of the house, so it doesn’t overflow due to heavy rain and storms.

A sump pump is used to remove the dampness and moisture that sits on top of the water table that is located on top of the home’s foundation.

Before, the draining of a weeping tile was via a connection to your existing drainage system. This system was almost a guarantee your home would eventually get flooded due to the system’s deterioration.

Canada’s weather is unpredictable, to say the least. There is more rainfall, and homes are becoming more and more susceptible to flooding as city sewer systems are incapable of keeping up with the larger volumes of water. Scarborough is growing rapidly, with more residential communities, people living and raising families. The need for waterproofing homes goes up in tandem with the uptick in population and residential communities.

A sump pump is an effective solution to alleviating worries more and more homeowners have about flooding. It will assist in keeping your basement dry and help to avoid any damage or loss to your home’s foundation.

The first step in a sump pump installation is to sever the old weeping tile connection from the city sewer. This will help against flooding.

In order to ensure the sump pump works most effectively we also recommend the installation of a sewer back-up valve (backwater valve) in order to protect you from any sewage that backs up from the city sewers. If you want more information, check out our drain section to read more about backwater valves and how important it is for flood protection in your home.

A sump pump has three main features:

  • The first consists of a tank that holds the water that is drained from a weeping tile
  • A pump that gets rid of the water from the basement by pumping it up and out of the basement to a drainage point that is predetermined in consultation with our team of professionals
  • An optional and recommended feature that can be added to the sump pump is a battery back-up system and alarm that alerts you when the pump is not functioning properly

The battery back-up system is a separate pump that gets its power from a marine battery. This is a remedy in the event of a power failure or a primary pump failure. This system will automatically switch on and continue to pump water out of your basement without power for up to 24 hours. The battery system also includes an alarm that automatically switches on every time the battery pump kicks in, so that you will be aware that the main pump is not functioning.

This one is a favourite of ours. It is another back-up option that can be installed with your sump pump to ensure the pump keeps working through any power failure. The beauty of the water back-up system is that it runs off water which turns its turbine while pumping water out of your basement. This back-up option has no time restraints. As long as your water supply is continuous, it will keep pumping.

There is one restriction to this type of solution, however. Your home needs to be equipped with a minimum 3/4″ water supply line from the city that runs into your home. For best results, ensure the supply line is close to the sump pump if possible. If you have this in place then you are good to go. Canada Waterproofers Scarborough can take a look at this as part of our free assessment of your property.

As we all know by watching the news – or just looking out our window – the world’s climate is rapidly changing. Global warming means more precipitation. Our home’s infrastructure was not build to withstand these types of winds and heavy amounts of rainfall. The aging infrastructure needs to be revamped and waterproofed in order to ensure that the home remains protected and intact.

The backwater valve is an alternative option to the sump pump. Without one or the other you risk losing your most valuable possessions. In fact, back in 2013 the insurance industry spent almost $1 billion in repairs of people’s basements and replacing possessions. Insurance companies and municipalities now encourage homeowners to install a mainline backwater valve.

  • The installation of the backwater valve takes only one day. It’s a fast and efficient process
  • The valve may be installed inside the foundation wall or outside the home
  • We use a camera to inspect the sewer to determine the ideal location for the valve
  • Once the valve is installed it will allow waste from the home to flow to the city main
  • If the city main becomes overworked and begins to back up, the valve will automatically close and prevent a flood from the city main sewere city main sewer

Canada Waterproofers Scarborough has over 25 years of experience and are experts in the installation of backwater valves. Contact us today for a free onsite assessment so we can get started right away!

Keep in mind – when installing any new fixture a permit from the city is required. Ask us about it.
