why clogged drains happen?

Now a days life can get really busy, with work, family, responsibilities, etc.; a slow or clogged drain can be very inconvenient particularly if you arent a DIY person, and dont like dealing with this type of messy-smelly situations. Many times you can help clear the blockage by just plunging the drain, but sometimes no matter how many drain cleaners you pour into the drain or how many times you plunge it just wont drain.
When this happens it is best to call a licensed plumber to discuss the different alternatives to get rid of the clog, to prevent damaging the drain, and avoid expensive drain repair costs, as there can be different methods of dealing with clogged or smelly drains.

What can cause a drain blockage?

Bath and shower drains

The main reason that causes the bathroom drains to get blocked is hair. The blockage happens when large amounts of hair make their way down the drain causing the drainage to be very slow or stop draining completely.

Clogged toilets

There are many different objects to blame for this such as baby wipes, feminine hygienic products, toilet paper, Q-tips, and even toys or any other object that can have been dropped by children or just as pure accident.

Kitchen sinks

The main factor for a kitchen sink to get clogged or slowly drain is food and grease. With time grease can stick to the walls of the pipe, and build up to the point where the sink wont drain at all. This can be a very unpleasant situation because the grease will cause it to be really smelly. Yuk!. Just think of what grease does to your arteries and multiply this by 1000%, and you can imagine what grease does to your drains.

Sewers lines

When roots penetrate the sewer lines, a blockage happens affecting the flow of the drains. This scenario is usually more frequent in more mature areas such as: Toronto, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Oakville, etc. The roots grow like fine-hair mass trapping residue from residences. The roots thrive in the moist environment of sewers lines eventually completely blocking them. One of the first signs that sewers lines might be slowing down, maybe due to roots blockage is gurgling sounds from the toilet. Other things that can clog sewer lines are bad installation of sewer lines that havent been supported properly, bell coupling that comes apart due to ageing of the clay sewers, belly in the pipe which is usually caused by a broken pipes leaking water, and making the ground wet and soft, which in turn makes the pipe sag downwards, The real problem with bellys is that grease and debris get stuck in the bottom of the pipe not allowing the pipe to work properly and eventually causing a sewer back-up, also a blocked sewer can be caused by the pipe collapsing, which is an extreme case, but it does happen.

Most common cause of sewer blockage

The most common cause of a drain blockage is what we call a building trap, which is an s-trap usually at the front of the house, which all your sewage goes through, you see the problem with these s-traps is that everything gets stuck in them, especially when people throw baby wipes down the toilet, as they are not designed for this type of use, and as a building trap is a very old code then we always recommend to upgrade your sewer system with the latest PVC sewer technology, which would include a complete PVC & ABS sewer system with a Back-water valve, we eliminate the s-trap as its not up to the latest building codes. Not all homes have a building trap but a lot of homes in Toronto do still have these systems and we recommend you have your sewer system checked so that you will never have to experience a sewer back-up.

What can cause a drain to smell?

  • A lack of a p-trap, or there could be a trap, but the water in the p-trap has evaporated letting the sewers gases in. It can be easily be fixed by letting water run in the trap again.
  • Lack of a venting pipe.
  • Blocked roof vent that canât vent properly. (Check them frequently to a prevent them getting blocked)
  • Improperly installed vents. (Make sure the vents are installed by a licensed contractor)
  • A clog in any drain will make it smell.
  • Broken seal around the toilet base; this can let sewers smell in. (call a license plumber to seal it properly).

There are different things that can be done to prevent a blockage in the drains at your home like:

  • Prevent putting foreign objects down the toilet,
  • Avoid throwing food leftovers or grease down the kitchen sink,
  • Use hair stoppers in showers and bathtubs to prevent hair going down the drain, and forming a clog.
  • The most important recommendation is âdonât use the drains as a disposal binâ.

A drain repair due to a blockage can be pricey, and if such a blockage comes at unexpected times it can be a shocker. Over the years Canada Waterproofers Inc. have helped customers with drain repairs and maintenance of their sewers lines. Exposure to sewer gases V-O-C (Volatile organic compounds) can be harmful to a humans health; if a blockage is suspected a good idea is to have your drains inspected for peace of mind, to protect you and your familys health.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
