Sump pumps are a key part of any interior home waterproofing system, and the sump pump check valve is an important additional component in that.
When the sump pump is discharging water via a pipe from the sump pit, or sump pump basin, after the pump shuts down, water that is still in the discharge line will then wash back into the pump. And you could be talking about a lot of water – up to ½ gallon.
That’s not a good scenario, since that will place additional wear and tear on the sump pump over time. It just means the device has to needlessly pump out additional water during the next pump cycle.
The check valve keeps any water sitting in the discharge line from re-entering the sump pit. The valve will slam shut under the pressure of water flowing back.
The placement of the check valve is a very important part of the process. If it’s placed too close to the sump pump, for example, it can wear out the pump motor over time. Talk to a Canada Waterproofers technician about proper installation.
