Melting Snow Which Can Lead to Basement Leaks!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Have you ever experienced basement flooding and wondered why? Probably you did. Not many of us expect their basements to flood during winter. Unlike spring, winter does not have heavy rains and when it rains, it doesnt last long enough to cause any damage. That is exactly why we fail to understand where the flooding comes from. Well, winter normally bring storms that can deposit snow in all the areas around our homes. That is the root cause of basement flooding. When the snow begins to melt, it leaks into your basement and thus the flooding starts.
The risk involved
When this happens, your basement is usually under a very high risk. It might be able to deal with the low rainfall during summer, but not with melted snow. Its a totally different thing. This is because during the winter the ground is normally frozen and this makes it hard for snow which is melting or rain to make its way to the surface. But where does it go?
This is what happens. The melted snow mostly follows the path which is not so resistant. And where do you think that is? Through your concrete foundation wall pores. Water is able to penetrate through those pores which are very tiny and finds its way to your basement. The situation is even worse if the foundation is cracked. The cracks become wider during winter because when the water which is inside them freezes; it usually expands, enlarging them.
When all these factors are combined, you may wake up to the find that your entire basement is flooded. If it is not your pipes which have burst or a blocked drainage, then there is no doubt that it is the melting snow.
Addressing flooding during winter
If this has never happened to you, then you are the luckiest person in the world. It could happen though if you dont take the necessary measures to prevent it from happening. Here are the steps that you should follow and snow melting over winter will be the least of your worries. You will be confident that your basement is safe throughout the season:
Clear gutters: It is important to clear downspouts and gutters, especially if there are no gutter guards in your home. They normally get filled with small twigs and leaves very easily. If you do so, there will be no difficulties in roof run off and this runoff will be far away from the foundation.
Shovel keenly: You should be very keen when you are shovelling. Avoid piling snow in areas which are near your home.
Regularly inspect the sump pump: You should always check your sump pump and ensure that it is working efficiently at all times. If it has any damages, have it repaired immediately.
Engage a professional company that does waterproofing: You should always remember to engage professionals. They will fix any cracks in the foundation and address any other issue which may lead to basement flooding. Dont try to fix the cracks yourself, you might worsen the situation.
