Due to global climate change, there has been more precipitation, and Southern Ontario certainly hasn’t been spared. Heavy rains and snowfall has pushed the existing sewer infrastructure to its limits and the result has been more flooding. In particular, residential basements have been impacted. In fact, in 2013, the insurance industry spent about $1 billion in repairs to client’s flooded basements and replacing personal possessions. Insurance companies, along with municipalities, now encourage homeowners to install mainline backwater valves.
A backwater valve is device that prevents outbound water from the home to re-enter through the home’s drain pipes. The valve prevents raw sewage from backing up into the home through toilets, sinks, showers.

Another solution that Canada Waterproofers Georgetown recommends as a back-up pump is a water back-up system. This type of pump uses water to turn its turbine, pumping the water out of your basement. It is a very effective method. As long as your water supply is in working order, the pump will keep pumping without fail.
There is a requirement for this type of pump that your home will need – a minimum of a 3/4″ water supply line that runs from the city to your home in order for the pump to work. If your home qualifies, this is the best solution to date on the market because it is one of the most reliable pumps out there and it doesn’t require any power.
When the power goes out, a heightened fear of flooding can set in. With a battery back-up system, your sump pump continues to work without power for up to 24 hours. It’s a separate pump that runs off of a marine battery in case of failure or power outage. The back-up pump will turn on automatically.
It also includes an alarm system to inform you when the battery pump is in use so that you’re aware the main pump is not functioning properly. If that ever occurs, you should contact us. Your sump pump may need some maintenance.
With the new method, the sump pump is installed to the weeping tile and the city sewer connection is severed. Canada Waterproofers Georgetown has over 25 years of experience in this industry, so we have your back.
We also recommend installing sewer back-up valves (backwater valve) to protect your home from any sewage that could back up and come into the house from the city line during a storm.
