3. The "80% Rule"

It is important to manage your expectations: the city doesn't necessarily pay for 100% of the work. The program reimburses 80% of the invoiced cost, up to the maximum caps listed above. For example, if your backwater valve installation costs $2,000, the city will reimburse 80% ($1,600), which happens to be the maximum cap for that item.

4. You MUST Use a Licensed Contractor

The City of Toronto is very strict about who performs the work. To qualify for the rebate, your contractor must hold a valid City of Toronto business license. For any drain work, they specifically need a T94 category license.

7. A 2-Year Window to Apply

In previous years, homeowners only had 12 months to submit their paperwork. The 2026 update has extended this to two years from the date of completion. 10. Check Your Property History

The subsidy is a "lifetime maximum" per property. If the previous owner of your home already claimed the rebate for a sump pump in 2018, you cannot claim it again for the same installation. Before you start work, you can contact the city at 416-338-7668 to confirm what (if any) funds have already been used for your address.
