French Drain Installation

A French drain is a gravel-and-perforated-pipe drainage system that collects unwanted groundwater or surface water and sends it to a suitable discharge path. It can be used inside a basement, beside a foundation, or in a yard, but it is not a universal fix. The right approach depends on where the water starts, how it reaches the building, and where the system can discharge.

Water at the floor-wall joint or beneath the slab may call for interior drainage and a sump system. A defined foundation crack, sewage backup, plumbing leak, or surface water flowing toward the house may need a different repair. An assessment should identify the source before a drainage system is selected.

What a French Drain Does

A French drain uses drainage stone and perforated pipe to collect water and carry it away from the affected area. Water moves through the stone, enters the pipe, and follows the planned drainage route.

Around a home, that route may be part of an interior basement drainage system, exterior foundation drainage near the footing, or a yard drainage system. The materials may be similar, but the system location, discharge method, and problem being addressed are different.

How French Drains Work

  • Water Collection

Groundwater and surface water flow toward the gravel-filled trench, which acts as a collection zone.

  • Filtration

Water filters through the gravel and enters the perforated pipe while debris and sediment are filtered out.

  • Drainage

The perforated pipe carries water by gravity to a sump pump, storm drain, or discharge point away from your foundation.

Types of French Drains

Interior French Drains

Installed inside the basement perimeter, collecting water that seeps through foundation walls and directing it to a sump pump for removal.

Exterior French Drains

Installed around the outside perimeter of your foundation, intercepting water before it reaches your basement walls—the most comprehensive solution.

When French Drainage May Be Relevant These common basement water problems indicate your home could benefit from a French drain installation. Early action prevents costly damage.

Water repeatedly appears at the basement floor-wall joint

Moisture or water returns after rain or snowmelt.

The existing interior drainage system or sump setup appears unable to manage the water

Water collects against the foundation or remains in a low section of the yard

Existing footing drainage may be blocked, damaged, or absent.

Don't Wait Until It's Too Late

Water damage is progressive. What starts as minor seepage can lead to:

  • Structural foundation damage ($15,000+)
  • Mold remediation ($3,000-$10,000)
  • Ruined belongings & furnishings
  • Decreased property value (10-25%)
  • Health issues from mold exposure
  • Insurance claim complications
