Safety First With a Flooded Basement

What If the Basement Flooded Because the Sump Pump Failed?
A sump pump is intended to remove groundwater collected by the basement drainage system. If the pump stops, loses power, becomes blocked or cannot keep up with the amount of incoming water, the sump pit can rise and overflow.
In that case, both the pump and the drainage system should be evaluated. A pump may be working properly but still be overwhelmed by unusually high incoming water. Conversely, a pump failure can cause a normally functioning drainage system to back up.
The discharge line also matters. Water must be moved away from the foundation rather than being discharged into an area where it can return.
Basement Flooding From a Sewer Backup Is a Different Problem
Wastewater entering through a floor drain, toilet, shower or other plumbing fixture is not normal groundwater seepage.
A sewer backup can involve the building drain, sewer connection, blockage, municipal sewer conditions or other plumbing factors. Basement waterproofing does not prevent wastewater from flowing backward through a sewer connection.
A backwater valve may be one part of sewer-backup protection where appropriate, but the actual sewer and plumbing conditions need to be identified first.
