Does the Basement Leak After Rain or Snowmelt?

Water that appears after rainfall or melting snow often points toward water accumulating around or beneath the foundation.

The actual entry point can still vary. Water may pass through a crack, enter at the floor-wall joint, reach the basement through a window opening or expose a drainage system that is no longer controlling the incoming water effectively.

The condition outside matters as well. Water that remains beside the foundation, downspouts that discharge close to the house and low areas that direct runoff toward the building can increase the amount of water reaching the foundation.
